# Create a community

> Company admins can create a new community owned by their company.

As a **company admin**, you can create a new community for your company. Your company owns the community, and you become its first **sub-community admin**.

  **Before you start**

  * **Only the company admin can create a community.** Other employees don't see the **Create community** button. If you need a community, ask your company admin to create it.
  * **Your company admin role must be active.** If your account was marked inactive, ask TV support or another admin to reactivate it.
  * **Each community name must be unique** across TV Community.

    In the left menu, click **Explore**.

    1. **Explore**: the page that lists all communities.
    2. **Create community**: click to open the create form. Only company admins see this button.

    1. **Community name** (required): up to 200 characters. Choose a name members will recognise, such as your company name, an industrial park, or a project.
    2. **Description** (optional): up to 200 characters. Tell companies what the community is for.
    3. Click **Create**. To close without creating anything, click **Cancel**.

    1. **Community created**: confirms that your company owns the community and that you are its first admin.
    2. **Community name and description**: what you entered in step 2. Until you add a logo and cover image, the community shows its first letter and a default cover.
    3. **Manage**: open the admin area to set up the community.

    Next, in **Manage**:

    * **Branding**: add a logo, cover image and colours.
    * **Staff Roles**: add colleagues as community admins (up to 5 admins).
    * **Content Management**: post news, and create forums, events and projects.
    * **Join Requests**: approve other companies that ask to join.

## What happens when you create a community?

* **Your company is a member right away.** Your colleagues see the new community under **Communities**, with the content that matches their [community group](/onboarding/community-groups).
* **Other companies** find it in **Explore** and click **Join** to send a request. You approve or decline it in **Manage → Join Requests**.

## FAQ & troubleshooting

    Only the company admin sees it. Check **Company profile**: if you can't edit it, you aren't the company admin. Ask your company admin, or ask them to hand the role to you (**Team → … → Assign company admin**).

  <Accordion title="I get an error that the name is already in use.">
    Another community already has that name. Choose a different name.

  <Accordion title="I clicked Create and got an error, but the name is unique.">
    Your company admin role may have changed or been deactivated since you logged in. Refresh the page or log in again. If the **Create community** button is gone, you are no longer the company admin. If it still fails, [contact TV support](/account/contact-support).

  <Accordion title="Can I change the name or description later?">
    Yes. Open the community, click **Manage → Branding**, and edit the details.
